Bahadur Shah Zafar, 1775-1862
This last Mughal Emperor is often maligned and ridiculed for his impotence. Few care to think there was little left for him to do by the time he came to ‘power’, and fewer still recognize the fact that his poetic merit has won him a high place in Urdu literature. Even so, reputation is a trinket both fragile and cheap, assuming that Zafar became the eventual scapegoat for the decadent legacy of Aurangzeb’s narrow piety. (site on Zafar)
