Family Happiness

We are basking in the fragrant promise
Of our lawn’s modest version of spring,
In a sunny corner, admiring flowers,
We brothers, poking fun at remote
Domestic and psychic inimicalities.
We understand each other about things
That please or nag the most, gossip well,
Seldom want to know anymore, build on
Each other’s vulgar or enticing wit, know
When to step out of the way, and
Mostly manage laughter and peace.
We are no martyrs of a common cause
And can go on killing time in cold blood.
We also have lovely friends of that sort –
Ach! How glad I’d be to share such bliss
With a girl who loves me as I am, if not
For what I’d like to represent. A wife, who
Just as offhandedly, often lets me be
Alone.
