Love Song
Divine’s the vision that cupid brings,
So sweet and strange the songs he sings
To send us dancing through meadows green,
Our thoughts entranced with languid dreams;
Brings forth life in so bright a light,
Exalts the soul to heaven’s height;
This soothing love, how touchy a matter!
A seething doubt all dreams would shatter.
Oh gods, why hide that clever smile?
I see your wisdom full of guile;
Don’t you have other games to play
Than leading tender hearts astray?
On man first all the pleasures heaping,
You leave him broken, troubled, weeping;
At least, before he sinks too low,
Tell him love is not always so.
